What are Root Canals? Root Canals are what happens when the bacterial infection spreads too far past the surface of the tooth and infects the lower half of the tooth therefore affecting the nerve. Root Canals are very common and actually happen quite frequently. So what are Root Canals? Well, inside of the tooth below the hard top layer of enamel, there is a layer of tooth called the Dentin. While the Dentin is the last hard layer of tooth, below that layer lies the soft Pulp of the tooth. This Pulp contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue that help to feed the tooth, nourish the tooth and most importantly supply blood and oxygen to the tooth and the tooth region. Not to mention that this is also what helps the tooth to develop into a mature adult tooth, however an adult tooth can still live without the Pulp as the tooth can be continuously nourished by the surrounding connective tissue. When this underlying pulp gets infected, it causes excruciating pain in the tooth region as the nerve ending is affected and causes pain in the tooth. When the pulp is infected and the nerve is then being affected, there is little that can be done without a root canal. As the infection is now spread to the nerve and the pulp, the result is the root canal procedure to remove the pulp, stop the infection and seal the tooth to ensure that the tooth does not have this infection again.

How is the Root Canal Procedure Performed?

So now that you understand what a root canal is, lets now talk about how a root canal procedure is actually performed. Root Canals occur when the inside of the tooth (The Pulp) become infected as a result of dental decay and dental caries, or when the the tooth had a prior root canal that failed, a crown that was not properly sealed or even a tooth that had trauma and resulted in bacteria leaking into the tooth or resulting pulp damage that would also create the need for a root canal. When you undergo a root canal or a other endodontic treatment, such as a root canal, the dentist will drill into the tooth and remove the infected pulp. After this step is done, your dentist will clean the inside of the tooth, remove any dental decay and bacteria and

other waste. After the tooth is fully cleaned, the dentist will take a rubber like material such as gutta-percha and fill the tooth in to ensure that no other bacteria enters the tooth. After injecting the gutta-percha

a into the inside of the tooth, the dentist will then seal the tooth off and prevent further bacteria from entering. Possible ways to seal the tooth include crowns, fillings for protection and/or other dental appliances such as a dental bridge.

What to do when a Root Canals Fails?

Root Canals can be painful. If they are not taken care of and dealt with when the infection first occurs, this can be detrimental for the tooth and can even cause widespread infection as a live infection is present in the tooth. The Pulp of the tooth and the actual oral cavity is connected directly to the lymphatic system and if the infection drains into the lymphatic system, this can cause widespread infection throughout the body. Below Dr. Arash Hakhamian DDS – Cosmetic & Emergency Dentist & Dental Implants Specialist talks about what to do when a root canal fails and how to find a dental professional such as a dental surgeon to fix the problem before it becomes worse.
