What is an Overbite?

What is an overbite? An overbite is a type of bite problem that involves the upper teeth and the lower teeth overlapping. While a small overlap in the teeth is completely normal,  a deeper or larger gap in the upper and lower teeth is an overbite. An issue of this type will cause the lower teeth to be worn down quickly. Usually an overbite causes the jaw to be pushed back and in turn this causes the lower teeth to be grinding and bitten down upon causing an intense grinding sensation. The good news is that overbites can be corrected and will be corrected as long as the proper treatment is provided. While most overbites are hereditary, overbites are also commonly caused by the following: sucking on your thumb as a baby, sucking on a pacifier as a baby, nail-biting, and many more things such as sucking on ice or any type of motion that causes the jaw to move forward and overlap the lower teeth.

What is an Underbite?

Underbites are the opposite of overbites. Underbites are commonly caused by genetics and there is little that can cause this besides genetics. An underbite is when the lower teeth are pushed forward and ahead of the upper teeth. This type of bite can give you constant headaches, ear aches, jaw pain and much more as a result of this type of bite: an underbite. In this type of bite, this causes the the upper teeth to be pushed backwards and the lower teeth and jaw to be pushed forward.

What is a Crossbite?

What is a crossbite? In between the previous two bites is something called a crossbite. Crossbites are when an entire side of the upper teeth fall inside the lower teeth one one side, or both sides. An anterior crossbite is when the front teeth fall inside of the lower teeth. So how do crossbites occur? Cross-bites can possibly occur if the baby teeth do not fall off during the initial phase when they should fall off. Crossbites can cause extreme stress on your jaws and thus lead to various forms of gum diseases, tooth decay and other dental problems. Other deviations of the mouth and teeth can cause crossbites to occur.

While genetics are major causes of these types of jaw problems it is important to make sure to use the proper forms of treatments to fix the problems when they arise. These type of dental problems can be fixed with Invisalign, Braces, and other dental procedures.
