Dental Bridges Los Angeles
What are Dental Bridges?
Dental Bridges are exactly as they sound. They bridge the gap between one, two or more teeth. Dental Bridges are made up of two or more fake teeth that are bonded together and placed over the gap. These fake teeth are called abutment teeth and they act as the “bridge”. In between the two teeth is a fake tooth that is usually composed of porcelain, gold, metal or alloy materials. In most cases, dental bridges are supported by implants or natural teeth that help to brace the bridge and offer structural support.
What are the Benefits of Dental Bridges?
There are many benefits of dental bridges. Bridges are used for a myriad of different dental restorations, most notably is the ability to restore smiles, restore the ability to properly chew, maintain the structural integrity and make-up of the jaw. Additionally, dental bridges help to support the gum line, help align and distribute the force of biting equally around the mouth region & prevent teeth from shifting.
What types of Dental Bridges are Available?
There are many types of Dental Bridges available. Bridges are a fantastic way to restore your dental problems and restore your mouth quickly and efficiently. Below we outline some of the different ways that dental bridges can be beneficial as well as a few different types of dental bridges that are commonly used in the field of dentistry:
#1 Traditional Dental Bridges
Traditional Bridges are the most common type of bridges used in the field of dentistry! These traditional bridges are commonly used and are used in conjunction with dental crowns. These type of dental crowns are also called dental abutments. These are used in conjunction with dental implants. Traditional Bridges are used when there is a gap or space in the teeth that needs to be fixed. These can be commonly fixed with dental implants and crowns to create the dental bridge and provide a solid type of dental restoration. These type of teeth will always need to be protected by dental crowns due to the nature of the enamel being shown to the surface.
#2 Cantilever Bridges
Cantilever Bridges, similar to traditional bridges, these type of bridges offer the same support and protection as traditional bridges. However, these type of bridges are slightly different in that they offer support of the bridge on only one side rather than on both sides like the traditional bridge. With only one tooth on one side, these type of bridges can still be secured with a tooth on only one side.
Similar to the traditional bridge, the cantilever bridge will need to be prepared to latch onto the adjacent tooth and that is done by removing the enamel. In some cases, this could damage the other teeth due to the nature of the “lever” that is created with cantilever bridges as explained by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Possible issues as a result is loosened crowns or fractured teeth.
#3 Maryland Bridges
Maryland Bridges are different than traditional bridges and cantilever bridges. Maryland bridges function by being suppported by the two adjacent teeth on either side but by attaching to the posterior area rather than across on the adjacent teeth. Also, contrary to the traditional bridge, the Adjacent teeth don’t need to be filled in the Cantilever and Traditional Bridges. While Maryland Bridges are not as serious as traditional bridges in terms of the actual procedure, Maryland Bridges do have possible complications including the limited strength that is in place. The problem is that there is little resin that holds the bridge in place and this can cause limitations in terms of the strength of the bridge. For this reason, this type of bridge can not stay in place in some areas of the mouth where there is a forceful biting action or constant tension that can cause the resin to pop out or break.
#4 Implant-Supported Bridges
Last but not least, Implant-supported Bridges! Implant supported bridges are extremely powerful and a great way to replace missing teeth. Implant-supported bridges are use to replace one or more missing teeth and are entirely supported with dental implants rather than with dental crowns. Usually, one dental implant is used per tooth. By doing this, these dental implants act as a great way to support the teeth and offer great protection for the actual bridge. Due to the bridges being supported by dental implants, the bridges act like natural teeth and are very secure and comfortable.
The downside to the dental implants is that this type of bridge requires two surgeries and thus you have to wait 4-5 months before getting the bridge finished.
How long do bridges last?
Bridges can last up to 10 years if they are well maintained and taken care of. Dental Bridges can last even longer in some instances but on average they last about 10 years.
Is it difficult to eat with a Dental Bridge?
Dental Bridges are not difficult to eat with and should feel like a natural tooth as long as it is done by a dental professional such as a dental surgeon (DDS) or endodontist. If the dental bridge does not feel normal in the mouth there may be something wrong with the dental bridge and you may need to get it checked to make sure that it fits correctly and that it offers support and is situated correctly in the mouth area.
